Kei Nishikori is through to the second round of the Madrid Open with a straight-sets win over Ivan Dodig.

Kei Nishikori has made it safely into the second round of the Madrid Open with a straight-sets victory over Ivan Dodig.

The Japanese world number 12 broke instantly in the opening set before fending off two break points to close it out 6-4.

Dodig fought back in the second by cancelling out an earlier break to level at 3-3, but Nishikori made sure of his progress by sealing the win 6-4.

The 10th seed will now face Spanish wildcard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez for a place in round three of the tournament.
