Kei Nishikori is through to the last 32 of the Sony Ericsson Open for the first time in his career after he defeated Lukas Lacko in straight sets.

Japanese number one Nishikori conceded only five points on his serve in the opening set, which he claimed with a single break in the fifth game.

The second set replicated the pattern of the first, as Nishikori again served without pressure and made the telling break in game five before going on to seal the win 6-3 6-3.

Nishikori, who was knocked out of the competition at this stage by Rafael Nadal last year, will now face either Marcel Granollers or Lukas Rosol in the next round.
