World number two Rafael Nadal has won his opening match of the 2012 season at the Qatar Open.
The Spaniard was taken the distance by Philipp Kohlschreiber, eventually emerging victorious 6-3 6-7 (2-7) 6-3.
At times during the match Nadal appeared to be struggling with a shoulder that he has confirmed will force him to take a break after the upcoming Australian Open.
His opponent in round two is not yet known.
