Juan Monaco secures a place in the second round of the Madrid Open courtesy of a straight-sets win over number nine seed Janko Tipsarevic.

Juan Monaco has stunned number nine seed Janko Tipsarevic in the first round of the Madrid Open by securing a 7-6[5] 6-3 victory to nab a place in the next phase of the tournament.

Tisparevic dominated the encounter in the early stages of the opening set by securing the first break of serve after looking comfortable on the court with powerful forehands and swift returns.

While the Serbian seemed poised to take the first set, Monaco began to find his feet and snatched a break to push the set to a tie-break, which the Argentine edged 7-5.

Games were won by the way of serve in the early exchanges of the second set, but it was Monaco who was able to snatch a vital break to put him in control of the court.

Following the blow, Tipsarevic was unable to recover and he was forced to relinquish a place in the second round to his unseeded opponent.
