Petra Kvitova battles through at Madrid Open

Former champion Petra Kvitova sees off Coco Vandeweghe 6-4 2-6 6-3 to reach the third round of the Madrid Open.

Petra Kvitova has battled into the third round of the Madrid Open with a three-set victory over Coco Vandeweghe.

The former champion was on top in the opening set, but three squandered break points threatened to take it to a tie-break. However, Kvitova eventually recovered to come through 6-4.

There was little to separate the players at the start of the third before American world number 36 Vandeweghe broke twice in a row on her way to closing it out 6-2.

Both women battled hard in the decider, giving away little from the baseline, though it was Kvitova who snatched a decisive break late on before sealing her progress 6-4 2-6 6-3.
