Konta continues progress at China Open

Johanna Konta has kept up her hopes of qualifying for the WTA Finals in Singapore by moving through to the last 16 of the China Open.

The British number two needs to reach at least the semi-finals in Beijing to realistically have a chance of reaching the end-of-season event, and she continued to show encouraging form on Wednesday as she got the better of the world number 26.

Despite the opening 10 games being shared, Konta was enjoying success on the Babos serve and she finally broke for a second time during the latter stages of the set.

The second was more of a formality as she struck two more times to secure a 7-5 6-2 victory to set up a showdown with US Open runner-up Karolina Pliskova, a player whom she has not defeated in five previous meetings.
