Heather Watson fights back to avoid upset in Hong Kong

Heather Watson avoids Hong Kong upset

Great Britain's Heather Watson has advanced to the second round of the Prudential Hong Kong Tennis Open by coming from a set down to beat Zhang Kai-Lin by a 3-6 6-1 6-2 scoreline.

Watson, the world number 61, is ranked 130 places higher than Zhang, but needed over two hours to overcome her Chinese opponent.

Zhang broke Watson in the first game of the match and went on to break twice more in the opening set, claiming it 6-3 to move in front.

Watson missed two break-point opportunities at the start of the second but then roared back by winning six games in a row to level the match.

Zhang piled on the pressure in the opening game of the third, but Watson held and eventually eased through the remainder of the match to reach the next round, where she will be up against qualifier and world number 245 Lee Ya-Hsuan.
