Third seed Fabio Fognini retires at Barcelona Open

A second big upset of the day at the Barcelona Open sees third seed Fabio Fognini knocked out by retiring against Santiago Giraldo.

The Barcelona Open saw another big upset as third seed Fabio Fognini retired after losing 10 games in a row against Santiago Giraldo this afternoon.

Just minutes after second seed David Ferrer was eliminated by unseeded Russian Teymuraz Gabashvili, Italy's Fognini surrendered against Giraldo two games from defeat.

Fognini won just 15 points as he struggled against world number 65 Giraldo, who took just over 20 minutes to clinch the first set.

With the score at 4-0 in the second and Colombia's Giraldo two games away from a double bagel, Fognini pulled out to send Giraldo through to the third round where he will face Austria's Dominic Thiem.
