Wildcard entry Tommy Haas caused a surprise at the Gerry Weber Open in Halle this afternoon by defeating Roger Federer 7-6 6-4 in the final.
Haas, playing in front of a home crowd, battled hard against the former world number one in the opening set to force a tie-breaker.
Both players held their service games during the early part of the breaker, before Haas claimed a mini-break to open up a two-point advantage. He made the most of that lead to serve out for a 7-5 success.
The second set saw both players keep hold of their respective service games as the score went to four games apiece.
However, just as the set looked to be heading for another tie-break, Haas broke to go 5-4 in front, before he kept his composure to serve out and win the trophy.
