Roger Federer wins in Germany after first-set scare

Federer edges out Raonic in Halle

Roger Federer will play in the semi-finals of the Gerry Weber Open after just edging a (4)6-7 6-4 7-6(3) victory over Milos Raonic.

The former world number one suffered a shock in the first set of the quarter-final clash in Halle as Raonic clinched a one-set lead after a battling tie-break.

The early stages of the contest went by the way of serve, with Federer commanding the court but failing to cause a break as Raonic launched some strong returns.

The set had to be decided by a tie-break, which the 21-year-old Canadian managed to just edge to grab the vital lead.

Despite a tight contest in the second set, the Swiss pro was able to find his feet and take control of the match, which eventually led to a set equaliser.

The third set remained a tight encounter with games going by the way of serve but it was the Federer who used his experience to push through a quarter-final victory on a tie-break and clinch a spot in the semi-finals of the tournament.
