Roger Federer comes out on top against Tomas Berdych to claim Madrid title

Roger Federer comes from a set down to defeat Tomas Berdych 3-6 7-5 7-5 in the final of the Madrid Masters.

Roger Federer has won his third Madrid Masters crown after coming from behind against Tomas Berdych this afternoon.

Victory for the 30-year-old moves him above nemesis Rafael Nadal in the world rankings to second, still adrift of Novak Djokovic in first.

On the blue clay of Madrid this afternoon, Federer lost the opening set 6-3 to Berdych after the Czech broke his serve at the first time of asking before holding firm on his own service.

Federer broke early on in the second but was unable to take the set at the first opportunity as Berdych broke back to 5-5.

However, Federer again broke to take the set 7-5 and take the game to a decider.

Berdych cracked first in the final set, allowing Federer to break and go ahead 5-3, but the Swiss great again couldn't convert as Berdych broke straight back.

At 5-6 Berdych saved three championship points at 0-40 but couldn't hold off Federer for long as the former Wimbledon champion took victory.

He joins Nadal in reaching 20 victories in Masters 1000 events.
