Juan Martin del Potro hoping for ATP World Tour Finals slot

Argentine Juan Martin del Potro has admitted that he is eager to secure a spot in the ATP World Tour Finals next month.

The top eight players in the world will contest the event at London's O2 Arena next month.

Former US Open champion Del Potro is currently ranked eighth in the latest standings following his return from a lengthy injury.

He is due to compete in the Basel Open next week and victory in Switzerland will see him safely through to the season-ending tournament.

"I'm very exited about trying to qualify," said Del Potro. "I need to do well here and at my next event in order to have a chance though.

"I have to play consistently this week, it would be great to win the title here for the first time. That would help my chances."

Del Potro is also planning to play at the Austrian Open.
