Boris Becker is released from prison eight months into a two-and-a-half year sentence for crimes relating to hiding assets under the Insolvency Act.

Former tennis star Boris Becker has been released from prison and is reportedly set to be deported from the UK after serving eight months of his two-and-a-half year sentence.

The six-time Grand Slam champion was jailed in April for hiding assets in order to avoid paying debts, having been found guilty of four charges under the Insolvency Act.

Becker was found not guilty of a further 20 charges, and his convictions related to removal of property, two counts of failing to disclose estate and concealing debt.

The 55-year-old was expected to spend half of his sentence in prison, and he was initially understood to have been held at HM Prison Wandsworth, a Category B prison, before being moved to the Category C Huntercombe Prison seven months ago.

Becker was released from jail on Thursday morning and will now be deported, according to the Press Association, as he does not hold British citizenship and received a custodial sentence of more than 12 months.

The three-time Wimbledon champion earned as much as £38m during his successful playing career, but he was declared bankrupt in June 2017 over an unpaid loan of £4m on his Mallorca estate.

Becker claimed that child maintenance payments, a costly divorce and "expensive lifestyle commitments" were to blame for his financial predicament following his bankruptcy.
