Ferrer through as Estrella Burgos retires

David Ferrer has got his Monte Carlo Masters campaign off to a positive start, but he needed just one set to get through to the third round on the clay surface.

The Spaniard's opponent Victor Estrella Burgos was forced to retire in the early stages of the second set with a shoulder problem, but he was already a set down, despite starting the contest the stronger of the two.

The Dominican player broke first, but Ferrer managed to break back after a lengthy fourth game, which included eight break points.

From then on, Ferrer kept the momentum on court and secured two further breaks of serve to clinch the opening set 6-2.

The Spaniard comfortably won his first game of the second and went a break up instantly, but Estrella Burgos decided that he could not continue and bowed out of the contest.
