Former Wimbledon winner and current French Open champion Maria Sharapova will carry the Russia flag at the Olympics opening ceremony.

Four-time major champion Maria Sharapova has been confirmed as Russia's flag-bearer at the London 2012 opening ceremony.

Sharapova completed the career Grand Slam earlier this year when she captured the French Open title at Roland Garros.

Prior to that, the 25-year-old won Wimbledon in 2004 and the US and Australian Opens in 2006 and 2008 respectively.

President of the Russian Olympic Committee, Alexander Zhukov told reporters: "Sharapova will carry our flag, she was the most worthy candidate among all our athletes."

The ceremony will take place on Friday July 27.
