Tommy Haas shocks Australian Open champion Stanislas Wawrinka to progress to the quarter-finals of the Italian Open.

Tommy Haas has shocked Australian Open champion Stanislas Wawrinka to progress to the quarter-finals of the Italian Open.

Wawrinka started the match strongly and won the first set 7-5, before 36-year-old Haas hit back in the second, where he broke his Swiss opponent three times on the way to a 6-2 win.

In the deciding set, both players held their serve until the eighth game when Haas broke Wawrinka and eventually went on to win 6-3.

Haas will face the winner of Grigor Dimitrov and Tomas Berdych's third-round clash which takes place later today.
