World number four Caroline Wozniacki beat Ekaterina Makarova 6-2 6-0, as she began the defence of her Indian Wells title.

Wozniacki, who had also won in straight sets on the pair's two previous meetings, lost her serve in the opening game, as she struggled to combat the Russian's left-handed trickery.

The Dane quickly settled and won the next three games, before she was again broken in game five.

Allowing her opponent only two points, Wozniacki then won three in a row again as she closed out set one.

The opening game in the second was tight, as multiple deuce points were needed for Wozniacki to hold onto her serve.

Makarova's failure to break seemed to dent her confidence and the former world number one swiftly completed a bagel set to progress to round three.
