Angelique Kerber beats Irina-Camelia Begu in straight sets in the BNP Paribas Tennis Open in Indian Wells this evening to go through to the third round.

Angelique Kerber has beaten Irina-Camelia Begu in straight sets in the second round of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells this evening.

The fourth seed made short work of the unseeded Romanian, winning the match 6-3 6-2 to progress to the third round of the California-based competition.

Begu had defeated Brit Heather Watson in straight sets in the opening round, but the German proved too strong for the 22-year-old, outclassing her in a comfortable display.

The result takes Kerber's win-loss record to 8-5 this year.
