Rafael Nadal has played down his third-round defeat to Alexandr Dolgopolov at the BNP Paribas Masters in Indian Wells.

The defending champion lost in three sets on Tuesday as he suffered a shock exit at the hands of the Ukrainian.

"I wanted to play very well here. I had good success in this tournament in the past, a tournament I always feel good about," Nadal told reporters.

"When you are pushed to the limit, these things happen. You can lose. I lost today. Congratulations. He played better than me. That's it. Life continues."

Nadal will now turn his attention to the upcoming Miami Masters.
