Kiki Bertens sets up Serena Williams semi-final

Kiki Bertens becomes the first Dutch woman to reach a Grand Slam semi-final since 1977 as she defeats Timea Bacsinszky in straight sets.

Kiki Bertens will meet world number one Serena Williams in the semi-final of the French Open after a comfortable 7-5 6-2 win over Timea Bacsinszky this afternoon.

The world number 45, who knocked out Williams's sister Venus yesterday, stunned another opponent as she became the first Dutch woman to reach the last four of a Grand Slam since 1977.

Bertens took the battle to Bacsinszky from the off, the pair exchanging six breaks in a feisty opening set in front of an almost-empty Suzanne Lenglen court, before Bertens claimed a crucial advantage with the scores at 6-5.

With the clock already past the hour mark, Bertens raced into a lead of three set points, making the most of the second with a fierce corner shot to put one foot into the semis.

From thereon it was momentum Bertens, as a more composed performance on her service game saw her quickly rack up a 4-0 lead over the tournament's number eight seed.

Bacsinszky did claim a break back in the next game but it was to be mere consolation as Bertens held firm to claim the victory in one hour and 52 minutes.
