Angelique Kerber continues her best ever run at the French Open by defeating unseeded Petra Martic in the fourth round 6-3 7-5.

Angelique Kerber has continued her best ever run at the French Open by progressing to the quarter-finals with a straight-sets win over Petra Martic.

The left-hander needed just a single break in either set to oust her unseeded opponent.

Tenth seed Kerber overpowered Croatian Martic in the opener and wrapped up the set 6-3 in just under three quarters of an hour.

She again broke through early in the second to take a 2-0 lead and remained strong on serve while delivering a consistent, powerful length with her groundstrokes.

Martic had to go for more risks but unfortunately her attempts to go for the lines failed in the next few games.

Both players were serving up some impressive long rallies with the drop shot often being used to finish off the point.

Martic managed to break back in the eighth game to level the second at 4-4 before holding serve to move ahead in the set.

She couldn't stay level for long though, as Kerber made another breakthrough to go ahead 6-5. This time Kerber didn't throw away the opportunity and finished the match despite going to deuce in the final game.

The German will play 21st seed Sara Errani in the last eight after the Italian beat Svetlana Kuznetsova this morning.
