Juan Martin del Potro clinches a place in the third round of the French Open after a tough four-set battle with Edouard Roger-Vasselin.

Juan Martin del Potro has edged his way into the third round of the French Open after claiming a 6-7[5] 7-6[3] 6-4 6-4 win over Edouard Roger-Vasselin.

The opening set went right down to the wire and despite the ninth seed displaying some impressive shots around the court, it was Roger-Vasselin who edged the tie-break 7-5 to clinch the lead in Paris.

The second set was as tight as the first and was also decided with a tie-break following an edgy tussle between the pair.

While the native Frenchman was successful in the decider of the opening set, his Argentinian opponent managed to take control of the tie-break and go level on sets in the clash.

Del Potro began to take hold of the contest in the third set by executing some powerful forehand shots and grabbing a vital break of serve, which allowed him to push on and take a two-set-to-one lead.

Roger-Vasselin refused to give up and the contest continued to stay tight with both players protecting their serve. However, an early break for Del Potro swayed the momentum his way, which allowed the number nine seed to keep his nose in front and clinch the fourth set and the match.
