Rafael Nadal says that there is a lot of room for improvement after making it through to the fourth round of the French Open at the expense of Fabio Fognini.

Rafael Nadal has said that he must improve if he is to win a ninth French Open title following his third-round victory over Fabio Fognini.

The Spaniard won 7-6[5] 6-4 6-4 on Philippe Chatrier, but did not have it all his own way as the Italian tested him over the three sets.

"I have to play better," Nadal told reporters. "If I want to have any chance, I really need to play better, but always it's the same story - when you win without playing your best, you have the chance to play better.

"If you don't fight when you have tough days or negative days, then you don't have all the chances for the future."

Nadal will play Kei Nishikori in the fourth round.
