Simona Halep: 'Maria Sharapova deserved to win French Open'

Simona Halep admits that Maria Sharapova deserved her victory in the French Open final on Saturday.

Simona Halep has admitted that Maria Sharapova deserved her victory in Saturday's French Open final.

Sharapova clinched her second title at Roland Garros as she saw off fourth seed Halep in three sets.

"Congrats Maria, you are a great player, you deserve this title, and I wish you all the best in the future," Halep is quoted as saying by BBC Sport. "I've had two incredible weeks, it was my first Grand Slam final and I cannot really explain how I feel."

Halep's previous best appearance at a Grand Slam was reaching the semi-finals at the Australian Open earlier this year.
