The story of the second day of play at Roland Garros.

Johanna Konta won her first match in the main draw of the French Open at the fifth attempt, beating Antonia Lottner of Germany 6-4 6-4.

Fellow British number one Kyle Edmund must come back to finish his match against Jeremy Chardy on Tuesday, though, after bad light stopped play with the pair tied at 5-5 in the fifth set.

Serena Williams recovered from a poor first set to beat Vitalia Diatchenko 2-6 6-1 6-0 while there were straightforward wins for Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.

Sixteen-year-old French wild card Diane Parry defeated Vera Lapko 6-2 6-4 to become the youngest woman to win a main draw singles match at Roland Garros for 10 years.

Hanfmann making himself heard

Yannick Hanfmann went where many have gone before by being summarily dispatched from Court Philippe Chatrier by Nadal. But the 27-year-old German qualifier stands out for other reasons. He only has 60 per cent hearing in both ears and is hoping to work saving endangered animals when his tennis career is over. "I feel tennis is amazing, I love it, but tennis isn't everything, there's more in this world," he told rolandgarros.com.

Fallen seeds

Women: Caroline Wozniacki (13), Julia Goerges (18), Mihaela Buzarnescu (30), Aliaksandra Sasnovich (32)
Men: Daniil Medvedev (12), Nikoloz Basilashvili (15), Denis Shapovalov (20), Frances Tiafoe (32)

Who's up next?

As well as the conclusion of Edmund's match, Cameron Norrie and Dan Evans will also begin their campaigns.

They have contrasting contests – Norrie takes on French qualifier Elliot Benchetrit, who is ranked 273, while Evans meets 23rd seed Fernando Verdasco.

World number one Naomi Osaka and Simona Halep are among the big names in action, taking on Anna Karolina Schmiedlova and Ajla Tomljanovic respectively.
