British number one Johanna Konta suffers a three-set defeat to Aryna Sabalenka in the first round of the Cincinnati Open.

Johanna Konta has been eliminated from the Cincinnati Open after suffering a three-set defeat to Aryna Sabalenka.

The British number one had been hoping to continue her recent good form, but Sabalenka rallied to register a 4-6 6-3 6-4 victory on Monday.

Both players had their opportunities during the opening set, but Konta struck twice from seven break-point opportunities to move closer to a place in the next round.

Konta also held the advantage in the second, but 20-year-old Sabalenka began to find her range midway through the set and was able to force a decider.

Sabalenka maintained her momentum in the third and although Konta battled on valiantly in order to save six break points, the world number 34 was still able to strike on one occasion to seal victory in two hours and 25 minutes.

Andy Murray also suffered defeat earlier in the day, while Kyle Edmund faces Denis Shapovalov in his second-round tie on Tuesday.
