The American competitor took an early 3-1 lead in the first set, but his Italian opponent responded with two break points to push on and grab the lead.

Fognini took control of the court by holding his service games in the second set and grabbing a break point of his own, while Querrey suffered 10 unforced errors.

Despite a couple of suspensions in play due to the weather, it did not throw Fognini off his game as he battled against Querrey in the third set.

Querrey squandered two break points, but his opponent managed to win one break, which proved vital as he served for the match.
