British trio through at Aussie Open

Johanna Konta, Heather Watson and Kyle Edmund have all progressed through to the second round of the Australian Open.

The trio join Andy Murray and Dan Evans, both of whom advanced on Monday, to make it five British players in the second phase of the competition for the first time in 30 years.

That figure could rise to six later when Naomi Broady takes on home favourite and 22nd seed Daria Gavrilova.

Konta - semi-finalist from last year - was the first to go through on the second day of play in Melbourne, defeating Belgium's Kirsten Flipkens 7-5 6-2.

Edmund claimed a 6-2 7-5 6-3 victory over Santiago Giraldo and will now face Spain's Pablo Carreno Busta, while British number two Watson slogged out a 6-3 3-6 6-0 win over home favourite Sam Stosur.
