Leon Smith tips Andy Murray for Australian Open success

Head of British tennis Leon Smith says that Andy Murray has "as good a chance as anyone" of winning the Australian Open.

Great Britain Davis Cup captain Leon Smith has claimed that Andy Murray is among the favourites to win the Australian Open.

The Scot will begin his attempt to win the first Grand Slam of the year when he faces a qualifier in the first round of the tournament, which begins on January 19.

"He is in great shape. He's hitting the ball extremely well," BBC Sport quotes Smith as saying.

"Now he's going to look to move forward and I think he's got as good a chance as anyone to win this tournament.

"There's no doubt, if you look at the way he has been playing in the Hopman Cup or Abu Dhabi in the exhibition match there, he looks very good."

Murray has never won the Australian Open, but reached the final in 2010, 2011 and 2013.
