Andrew Castle: 'I never expected Stanislas Wawrinka to win a Grand Slam'

Castle never expected Wawrinka glory

Former British number one Andrew Castle has admitted that he never expected Stanislas Wawrinka to win a Grand Slam.

The Swiss pro has moved to number three in the world after a four-set victory over Rafael Nadal in the Australian Open final on Sunday.

"Did I see him winning a Grand Slam, not really, but the manner in which he beat [Tomas] Berdych and [Novak] Djokovic was impressive, as was the manner in which he put down an ailing opponent yesterday," Castle told BBC Breakfast.

"I didn't expect it but he clearly deserves it."

Wawrinka became the first player to win a Major outside of the world's top four.
