France win gold in men's 4x100 freestyle relay

France have won the gold medal in the men's 4x100 freestyle relay at the Olympic Games in London.

The French edged out a hotly-tipped United States team that included Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte with a finish time of 3:09.93.

Russia won the bronze, finishing in 3:11.41, a fraction of a second ahead of a strong Australia team.

Great Britain bowed out of the competition at the first hurdle earlier today, finishing sixth in the heats.
