England take gold in rifle pairs as Northern Ireland's David Calvert sinks

England take gold in the full bore rifle pairs at the Commonwealth Games, with decorated Northern Irishman David Calvert sinking to fifth.

David Calvert had to settle for fifth place in the full bore rifle pairs in what was his tenth Commonwealth Games.

The 63-year-old RAF Wyton flying instructor already has four golds and four bronze medals to his name, making him the most decorated Commonwealth sportsperson in Northern Ireland's history.

A score of 581 was only good enough for fifth for Calvert, who is back in action tomorrow in the full bore rifle singles.

Calvert is quoted as saying by the Cambridge News: "It was certainly challenging. We had the delays with the fog coming in and the threatening storms, it looked like it was going to get extremely difficult. We both feel we should have performed better."

David Luckman and Parag Patel took gold for Team England with 595, with Canadian duo Jim Paton and Des Vamplew second with 592 and Scottish hopes Angus McLeod and Ian Shaw third on 590.
