Dan Rivers relieved to claim bronze medal

Bronze medallist Dan Rivers says that he is relieved to have withstood the pressure of winning at the Commonwealth Games after sealing a podium finish at Carnoustie.

England shooter Dan Rivers has expressed his relief at keeping his composure to win a bronze medal in the Commonwealth Games on Friday.

The Didcot marksman fired himself to a third-place finish in the 10m air rifle event at Carnoustie after missing out on a silver by losing to Abdullah Baki of Bangladesh.

"The heart rate, as soon as you see you are tied on the screen, it just goes up even more," the 23-year-old is quoted as saying by the Oxford Mail.

"You just have to pick your timing, go between the beats, and do your best. Nerves of steel or hit and hope? We try to train under pressure, but on this scale nothing compares.

"It's like a penalty shootout in front of a packed stadium."

Rivers will also compete in the 50m rifle prone on Monday.
