O'Connell wants Ireland improvement

Ireland captain Paul O'Connell has said that there is plenty room for improvement in his team following their 50-7 victory over Canada on Saturday.

O'Connell, who was sin-binned early in the second half, led his side to the win but wants a stronger start from the team in their next World Cup fixture.

The new Toulon recruit told reporters: "I think the performance was there to a certain extent but I don't think we started the way we wanted to. I thought Canada played some great rugby in the early parts of the game but once we settled down I thought we handled the ball really well and played some good rugby.

"We wanted the same things out of the warm-ups as any team would want, you want to get rid of the nerves and not turn over the ball. We did that a little bit in those two warm-up games and I know we did it a little bit again there.

"I think we had a period after half time where we made mistakes which is disappointing. But I think we got into a rhythm and once we got over that start we played some good rugby."

Ireland play Romania in their next Pool D match at Wembley on Sunday.
