Owen Farrell closing in on return to action following quad strain

Owen Farrell is closing in on a return to action from a quad strain and is expected to play against Clermont Auvergne next week.

Saracens director of rugby Mark McCall has claimed that Owen Farrell is close to returning to action after suffering a quad strain last month.

The 23-year-old picked up the problem during his side's 36-32 victory over London Irish.

According to BBC Sport, McCall has revealed that Farrell is "touch and go" for Saturday's Premiership match against Gloucester, but is likely to be available for the European Cup game against Clermont Auvergne the following week.

Farrell is expected to be back in contention for England's first Autumn International against New Zealand on November 8.
