Simon Amor disappointed for retiring Tom Powell

Amor disappointed for retiring Powell

England rugby sevens head coach Simon Amor has expressed his disappointment on behalf of Tom Powell following the team's defeat in the quarter-finals of the Commonwealth Games.

Powell, who will retire after the Games, was unable to help his side to victory over Samoa as the Pacific Islanders edged to a one-point victory at Ibrox.

Amor paid tribute to the "stalwart" Powell and admitted that the defeat was especially disappointing due to the veteran's impending departure from the squad.

"[I'm] disappointed for all the players. They all set themselves out with the target of winning a medal. Tom's been an unbelievable stalwart for England for a number of years, so we're disappointed for him," he told reporters.

England will still be in action in the evening session of day two, with a match against Scotland in the plate semi-finals followed by a potential final against Kenya or Wales.
