Widnes Vikings 14-32 Wakefield Wildcats

Wakefield Wildcats begin the new Super League season with a 32-14 win over Widnes Vikings at the Stobart Stadium.

Wakefield Wildcats have begun the new Super League season with a win by beating Widnes Vikings 32-14 at the Stobart Stadium.

The hosts took the lead in the seventh minute when Danny Craven touched down. Patrick Ah Van kicked the goal to put Widnes 6-0 ahead.

Despite being under pressure from the home side, Wakefield hit back on 20 minutes thanks to Ali Lauitiiti's try. However, Isaac John could only put his kick wide.

The ball was flicked out to the wing for Ah Van to score his first try of the campaign just before half time, but he couldn't make the kick as Widnes went in 10-4 up at the break.

Andy Raleigh's try, combined with John's kick, drew Wakefield level, before Hep Cahill intercepted the ball to run 60 metres and score a try to put Widnes back in front.

Richards Mathers sold the Widnes defence a dummy just after the hour to touch down, with John's kick making the score 16-14 to the visitors.

It got worse for the home side soon after as Tim Smith battered his way through to the try line, with John's kick making it 22-14.

Peter Fox's two tries in the final ten minutes sealed the opening-day win for Wakefield.
