Steve McNamara: 'England not favourites against New Zealand'

England coach Steve McNamara rubbishes talk of his side going into next month's international series against New Zealand as favourites.

England coach Steve McNamara has dismissed talk of his side going into next month's international series against New Zealand as favourites.

McNamara's side have been defeated by just two points in their last two fixtures with New Zealand - losing 20-18 at Wembley in 2013, and 16-14 at Dunedin last year - and the bookmakers have tipped England to claim revenge in November.

The 44-year-old has rubbished the idea that his side are favourites though, and insists that November's fixtures will be too close to call.

"I didn't know that and I'm not interested in that," McNamara told reporters following his side's final practice session before the series. "We've got a really tough game in front of us. We've got to work hard and we'll have to be good for a long period of time.

"I'm sure New Zealand aren't too fussed about who's favourites as well. We know the task in front of us is a big one but we're ready for it.

"The last couple of times we've played each other we've scored three tries apiece and it's probably been a goal kick that's separated us. There are two very good teams playing against each other."

England's first clash with New Zealand will take place at Hull FC's KC Stadium on Sunday.
