Two horses die on day one of Grand National Festival at Aintree

Two horses – Clonbanan Lad and Marasonnien – collapse and die on day one of the 2016 Grand National Festival at Aintree.

Two horses were killed on day one of the Grand National Festival at Aintree.

Clonbanan Lad and Marasonnien were pulled up by their jockeys in the Fox Hunters' Chase but later collapsed and could not be saved.

Two horses died in the whole of last year's meeting at the Liverpool course, but there has not been a fatality in the main Grand National race since the fences were modified in 2013.

Favourite On The Fringe won the Fox Hunters', while other favourites Cue Card and Annie Power also delivered victories on day one.
