Riders "distraught" by death of Simone Montgomerie

The Australian Jockeys' Association has revealed that riders are feeling "distraught" by Simone Montgomerie's death.

The 26-year-old passed away in hospital yesterday after she suffered a fall from her horse during the Darwin Cup in Australia.

"Riders across Australia are clearly shocked and distraught by what has happened," BBC Sport quotes the AJA's Des O'Keeffe as saying.

"Simone was a really warm, vivacious young woman. It's a tragedy you couldn't possibly try to explain."

The race meeting was cancelled following the news.
