Richard Hannon announces retirement from horse racing

Trainer Richard Hannon announces that he will retire from horse racing at the end of the year.

Trainer Richard Hannon has announced that he will retire from horse racing.

The 68-year-old has written to owners to confirm that he will stand down at the end of the year.

Hannon, whose horse Sky Lantern won this year's 1,000 Guineas, will hand over his licence to son Richard on January 1.

"It has been a long career and I've trained a lot of winners but it's about time Richard got his name on the roster of trainers," he told the Racing Post.

Hannon began his training career in 1970.
