Paul Hanagan retains flat jockey title

Paul Hanagan retains his Flat Jockeys Championship title as Silvestre de Souza fails to win at Doncaster.

Paul Hanagan has retained his Flat Jockeys title after Silvestre de Souza failed to win at Doncaster today.

Brazilian rider De Souza closed the gap between the two to four victories last night but needed to win all of his rides today and have Hanagan not pick up a win.

True Bond failed to deliver for De Souza in his first race of the day, handing the title to Hanagan for the second year running.

"It's a big relief," he said. "It feels like a big weight has been lifted and it's gone right down to the wire again."

Hanagan showed emotion last night after securing a photo-finish victory on Berbice, the horse's first win in 36 attempts, at Wolverhampton.

"Last night was incredible but I've stuck at it and kept going.

"This season seemed to come around so quick. It didn't feel like two minutes since the last season ended and the new one began, but in a good way the balls just kept on rolling."

The Yorkshireman has already been made joint favourite with Ryan Moore for next year's title.
