Golden Chieftain wins JLT Handicap Chase

Brendan Powell claimed his first ever victory at the Cheltenham Festival on board Golden Chieftain in the JLT Handicap Chase this afternoon.

Teenager Powell, whose father Brendan senior won the Grand National, had not been given too much of a chance on the eight-year-old and was rated as a 28-1 shot by the majority of bookmakers.

However, as a number horses pulled up over the course of the three-mile race, the Colin Tizzard-trained gelding began to advance through the field.

He eventually went beyond pre-race favourite and leader Our Mick, before clearing the final hurdle with ease and going on to claim the win by 10 lengths.

With Our Mick having taken second spot, White Star Line finished third.
