Sunderland fan 'charged for racist gesture'

A Sunderland fan has reportedly been charged with a racially-aggravated public order offence for making an alleged monkey gesture at West Bromwich Albion striker Romelu Lukaku.

Liam Jones was arrested in November after photos emerged of the 21-year-old making the gesture during Sunderland's 4-2 defeat to the Baggies.

The Daily Mail quotes chief superintendent Kay Blyth, Sunderland Area Commander, as saying: "We will not tolerate racist behaviour of any kind and will fully investigate any reports we receive."

Jones, who is thought to have claimed that he was doing a chicken dance, will appear at Sunderland Magistrates' Court on April 22.
