Real Madrid defender Marcelo accused of tax fraud in Spain

Spanish prosecutors accuse Real Madrid defender Marcelo of defrauding local tax authorities of €490,917 (£437,753) in 2013.

Real Madrid full-back Marcelo has been accused by Spanish prosecutors of defrauding local tax authorities of nearly half a million euros.

The long-serving defender, a part of Los Blancos' setup for the past decade, is alleged to have defrauded authorities of €490,917 (£437,753) in 2013.

Marcelo is one of a number of Spain-based players to have been targeted by prosecutors, with teammate Cristiano Ronaldo, Ricardo Carvalho, Angel Di Maria, Javier Mascherano, Radamel Falcao and Fabio Coentrao also being investigated.

Barcelona forward Lionel Messi was found guilty in 2016 of defrauding tax authorities of €4.1m (£3.6m) from income made directly from image rights.

The investigation relating to Marcelo also concerns image rights and the Brazilian's use of companies abroad to handle his earnings.
