Northern Ireland fan dies at Euro 2016 after falling from beach promenade in Nice

Northern Ireland fan dies at Euro 2016

French police have confirmed that a 24-year-old Northern Ireland supporter has died at Euro 2016 after suffering a fall in Nice.

The fan, who has not been identified, is believed to have hit his head on a rocky beach after falling from a walkway and passed away later that Saturday night.

The incident occurred on the eve of Northern Ireland's 1-0 defeat to Poland in the southern French city.

"Many fans were out on the promenade, and were drinking heavily when the man fell from the promenade," The Mirror quotes a police spokesman as saying. "The victim was taken to Nice hospital but has since died."

The fatal accident was unrelated to the violent scenes nearby, where local youths threw bottles at Northern Ireland fans in bars and restaurants in the Place Massena area.
