Gascoigne: 'I gave Rooney £40 for booze'

Former England football legend Paul Gascoigne has revealed that he once gave Wayne Rooney £40 to buy himself a "couple of pints" during his time at Everton.

The 48-year-old, who played for the Toffees between 2000 and 2002, noticed then-14-year-old Rooney's talent after watching him play in an Under-19s game on Merseyside.

During an appearance on Soccer AM, Gascoigne said: "After the game I went in and said 'well done lads, I've got £40 spare, is anyone going out tonight?' Wayne Rooney said 'I am', so I went, 'there's £40 quid, go and get yourself a couple of pints tonight. He's never given the £40 back so the interest is about £1.2million now!"

Rooney left Everton in 2004 to join Manchester United.
