England cricketer Ian Bell absent for birth of son

England batsman has Ian Bell missed the birth of his son, despite leaving his side midway through their first-Test defeat to India.

The 30-year-old left the squad on Monday to fly home when he discovered that his wife had gone into labour with his first child.

Despite bringing his flight forward, the batsman was too late to be present for the arrival of Joseph William Bell.

England gave Bell permission to leave India ahead of the series.
