BT Sport takes Ashes TV rights from Sky by sealing five-year deal

BT Sport beats Sky to the rights to broadcast the 2017-18 Ashes series in Australia after signing a five-year deal.

BT Sport has announced that it has picked up the broadcast rights to England's defence of The Ashes in the 2017-18 series in Australia.

Sky Sports had extensive coverage of England's Ashes triumph on UK shores this summer, but its TV rival has swooped in for the next campaign.

As part of a five-year deal, which is reported to cost £16m a year, BT Sport will broadcast all Australian home Test matches, including The Ashes series, as well as one-day internationals and Twenty-20 fixtures played down under.

The Big Bash League, which includes many international cricketers, will also be shown live on the network, which last season snatched the rights to broadcast Champions League football from Sky.

BT TV and BT Sport managing director Delia Bushell said: "BT Sport is delighted to be adding international cricket to its lineup, and to be the new home of the next Ashes tour in Australia.

"We will show live domestic games featuring the best players in the world during the Big Bash League and all Australian home matches for the next five years."

The women's Ashes series and women's T20 Big Bash League will also be shown by BT Sport.
