Arsenal 'not helpful' in backing film trying to tackle homophobia in football

Filmmaker Rhys Chapman tells Sports Mole that Arsenal have 'not been helpful' in backing film Wonderkid, which hopes to tackle homophobia in football.

Filmmaker Rhys Chapman has revealed that Arsenal have not been "very helpful" in supporting a new short film hoping to tackle homophobia in football.

Chapman has directed and co-written Wonderkid, which focuses on an unnamed gay footballer searching for acceptance in the game.

The 25-year-old and his team have been searching for backers to help move the project along, and while a handful of clubs in the Premier League have lent their support, Arsenal are said to have been less than helpful.

"We've spoken to a few [big clubs] and asked for their help quite early on and we didn't get much help really," Chapman told Sports Mole. "Through our kickstarter campaign we managed to get some rewards from Everton, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea, so they were willing to support the campaign.

"Unfortunately Arsenal, who do a lot of work to support the LGBT community, have not been very helpful at all, which is a shame."

Arsenal strongly backed the Rainbow Laces campaign earlier this year by teaming up with Paddy Power to film an advert involving Mikel Arteta, Santi Cazorla, Olivier Giroud and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
